Epic Builds in Minecraft are buildings that usually represent a real world location, such as a cathedral or the entire nation of Denmark. Sometimes these types of builds are recreations of fictional places or other pop culture references. Full Sail Labs facilitators Mr. Anthony and Mr. Sam created an epic build of their own, choosing to build the Full Sail Labs facility in Minecraft.
There’s a lot of work that goes into reproducing the details of a real world location in Minecraft. Here are a few things to consider to help you prepare for your own epic build:
Pictures are worth a thousand blocks
If you have access to the location you want to recreate, take as many pictures as you can to reference for your build. This will give you ideas for what colors and materials to use for your build. The pictures will also give you ideas on what to use for the small details you might not think to include in your build.
If you don’t have direct access to the location you want to recreate, a search engine (like Google or Yahoo) can be your best friend. You’d be surprised the amount of different angles you can find in images on the internet.
If you blueprint, it will build
Blueprinting your build is the best way to make sure it will fit where you end up building it. You’ve probably seen something like this in the movies, or maybe you’ve seen the blueprints for your home. A blueprint is the design portion of your build, showing exactly how big each room is going to be.
Start from the outside and work your way in. Outline the outside walls of the building, then section off each individual room on the inside. Keep in mind that you will likely need to double up on the outside part of the building to match the difference in materials and colors from the outside and inside of your building.
Speaking of materials
Before constructing your masterpiece, you’ll want to pick out the materials to help you on your way. To stay true to the source, choose materials that resemble the color and texture of the details in your images. Make note of what materials should go where in each part of your blueprint.
It may take a little while to create something like the epic builds of the Floo Network, but these tips will help you get started on your creation.
